Tripod used to have one little ad that I could minimize and then get on with browsing. Now, I go to my Tripod site and, like, four of those bloody aggravating pop-up ads show up, one right after the other. And don't even get me started on the "You have a 'Free' DVD waiting for you," ads, or the "Your computer isn't running up to capacity! Click here to optimize your system resources!" (or whatever the f---k the thing says; I don't really know, and frankly don't care.)
Why must all free web servers have HUGE popup ads or huge, effing ugly ad banners? Way back in the dark ages of the free servers (the mid 1990s, and I realize I'm probably dating myself by saying this, but what the hell?), free web sites were pretty cool. They offered substantial space, free e-mail, and numerous other goodies, all for free. Considering most ISPs only gave out anywhere from 1 to 5 MB of web space, places that gave out even 6 MB were a gods-send, especially if you wanted to upload things like multimedia files.
Now, though, most of the free sites frankly suck. 50 Megs.com? Only if you pay them to host your site. Now you can't get a free site on them, period. Angelfire.com? Not too bad, but that ugly ad banner makes my pages look ugly, too. Geocities? Ugly pop-up ad that fills up most of the screen and covers up my content. Fortunecity? HUGE ugly ad banners, and no FTP access, plus the tech support is non-existent. *grrrr....*
Tripod isn't that bad, I guess, if you don't mind the numerous pop-up ads. But I'm getting sick of going to my Tripod site and having five of those annoying little windows open up before it even loads.
OK, I'm done ranting. If you find a free server you like, by all means, go for it. I just hope you're luckier than I am.
