It's by Yu Watase (the same person who did Fushigi Yugi) and has the same beautiful characters. I've read the first two translated manga volumes from Viz and watched the first 5 DVDs (there are three more, and I so want 'em!)
Warning to prospective viewers -- the series is tragic; lots of people die (some of them in rather gruesome ways; this is not for small kids or those who are easily upset by violence), and the story is not a happy one much of the time (the heroine's father is killed by her family, another character loses her husband in a car accident and then suffers a miscarriage, one of the main characters is slowly taken over by a villain, two more characters commit suicide, etc.). My husband commented that "It's like watching real life," but he's hooked as well.
I found myself feeling sorry for Yuki and Miori -- it seemed like they were victims of circumstances more than antagonists. And despite the fact he's a villain, Kagami has a certain je ne sais quoi about him, at least IMNSHO.
Am waiting eagerly for the soundtrack to arrive -- I have "Scarlet" and "One" playing through my head...:-)
An aside -- my Steel Angel Kurumi CDs finally arrived yesterday! Yippee!
