In memoriam

On this day in 2003, the STS Shuttle Columbia broke up as it re-entered the earth's atmosphere, killing all seven astronauts on board.

It's amazing that a chunk of insulation foam essentially killed them. I just hope that NASA has got their new external tank properly tested for the launches that are supposed to occur this spring when they bring the shuttle fleet back online. Especially after spending 2 years and a few billion dollars into fixing the various problems identified.

I'm all for space exploration (I admit it, I'm a space-sciences geek), and I understand that there are dangers associated with it, but this kind of thing shouldn't have been a problem to begin with.

Then again, I also believe that the money they dump into the space programs would be better used on solving problems here on Earth, like homelessness, poverty and starvation, as well as for providing government-sponsored health care for everyone and killing off the budget deficits.

Oh, well... I'm only a Canadian commenting on U.S. policies, so my opinion doesn't mean squat to Mr. Bush.
